Love is Topic for Next Human Workplace Meet Up

“Does love really belong at work?” he wondered.

“Well, do people belong at work?” she asked in reply.

“Yes, of course,” he said.

“So then, yes, of course, love belongs at work,” she assured him. “Not romantic love, but all the other kinds of love that are also part of being human. Those belong at work. If people are going to be at work, then love must be at work. Otherwise, work won’t work. People won’t work, at least not well.”

At the next Human Workplace Meet Up in Olympia, WA, we will explore the concept of love at work. Join other public servants and friends of government to explore the many types of love that are part of being human and essential for success at work.

Through stories, reflection, and dialogue, together we will better understand loving experiences that support our best contributions, surprising innovations, and effective collaborations. We aren't talking about romantic love, but love expressed in empathy, care, respect, trust, altruism, inclusion, kindness, and friendship.

What's at the center of your work?

When a Human Workplace Meet Up gathers next on March 9th from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. at the Department of Enterprise Services in Olympia, participants will break new ground as they engage in an exploration of the question, "What's at the center of your work?" 

Every day in every organization and team, for every person, something is at the center of work. Something is deemed to be most important and that something drives every other decision and action about everything else. Make Work More Human advocates for putting people at the center, but what else could we put there? What else do we put there? A whole lot of other things apparently. And all of those other things have serious implications for the workplace, for the people doing the work, and for the customers served. 

At this Meet Up you will have the opportunity to dive into a new model for understanding what we choose to be centered on at work and the impacts of those choices. Through reflection and discussion, you will contribute to this new model and expand thinking about the deep importance of being human-centered and the consequences when we are not.

January Meet Up Discussed Human-Centered Leaders and Teams

On January 26, 2017, the second gathering of A Human Workplace Meet Up met. Renamed "A Human Workplace Meet Up," more than 30 people gathered from across state and local government to continue dialogue and advocacy for making work more human. 

This month the group explored what it actually mean to be human-centered. Specifically, what does it look like to be a human-centered team? And what does a human-centered leader actually do?

Their insights will be shared in future blog posts coming soon at Make Work More Human.

Gemba Academy Podcast from the Fall Continues to Generate Interest in A Human Workplace

Last November Ron Pereira spoke with Renée on the Gemba Academy Podcast. Check out Episode 191, "How to reflect on the roles of fear and love in continuous improvement."

Since then we've heard from people all over the world, Canada, Australia, the UK, Spain, New Zealand. who listened to this podcast and responded with enthusiasm. The message of less fear and indifference and more love and safety at work is universal and core to what it is to be human.

Lean organizations everywhere are striving to create a workplace where employees continually learn and grow so that they can solve problems, discover new solutions, and create amazing results for customers. That growth happens when the workplace is physically and psychologically safe though still challenging. This balance of both safety and discomfort happens best when we feel loved.

It's what the world needs now. (Sorry, couldn't resist that one!)

First Ever "Love Not Fear" Community Gathering on December 8, 2017, a Success!

Twenty public servants from eleven different organizations gathered in Olympia, Washington, on December 8th for the first ever meeting of people inspired by the Make Work More Human message! After a quick rundown of the core ideas of Love Not Fear, the group did a warm up that got them connecting and sharing stories of love at work. Then they used the "Lean Coffee" methodology created by Modus Cooperandi to explore and find answers to a key question: "What barriers need to be overcome to create a loving, safe workplace?" They finished with discussing the future. What would they like to learn, read, watch, explore, visit, or hear to advance their thinking, skill, and practice of love and safety in the workplace?  The ideas for learning how to bring more humanity to work were abundant! Next gathering will be in January 2018 -- exact dates to follow soon!

Public servants gather to talk about love and fear at work

Human-centered message shared in Canada in December 5-6, 2017

The Love Not Fear message received a warm welcome in Toronto, Canada on December 5 and 6, 2017, at the Canadian Institute's 2nd Annual Conference on "Lean Process Improvement in the Public Sector." Renee's keynote shared the Make Work More Human research and explained how a human centered workplace is necessary for a Lean culture and management system. Public servants from Canadian national, provincial, and local governments were enthusiastic about the importance of decreasing fear and indifference and increasing love and safety at work.
